Tesla Powerwall and battery storage engineered for Southern California homes and businesses: backup power when the grid fails, and lower energy bills year round.
Solar panels produce their most electricity at midday. Households use their most electricity between four and nine in the evening, when Southern California Edison rates are at their highest and the array is winding down. Battery storage is what closes that gap. A solar battery captures production your home does not need at noon, holds it, and releases it during the expensive part of the day or when the grid goes dark. That single function is why storage has moved from an optional upgrade to the core of most new solar designs in our territory.
Xero Solar has designed, installed, and serviced solar energy storage since batteries became a practical residential product, and we are a Tesla Certified Installer. Below is a plain account of how battery storage works, what it costs, how to size it, and how it performs over a service life measured in decades rather than seasons.
California's current net billing structure, commonly called NEM 3.0, changed the value of exported solar. Under earlier rules, sending a kilowatt-hour to the grid at noon earned close to what you paid to pull one back at eight in the evening. Under net billing, that exported energy is credited at a much lower export rate while the evening energy you buy is still priced at the peak retail rate. The spread between those two numbers is the case for a battery.
With storage, midday production that would have been exported for a fraction of its worth is instead banked on site and consumed during the peak window. The economics stop depending on utility credit policy and start depending on your own consumption. For most of the homes we design, adding storage is the difference between a modest bill reduction and something close to a self-supplied evening.
A grid-tied solar array without a battery shuts down the moment utility power fails. That is a code requirement, not a defect: it protects line crews working on the circuit. Only a battery with the right protective equipment can island your home and keep supplying it. How much of the home stays alive is a design decision made before installation.
A dedicated backup subpanel carries the circuits you cannot do without: refrigeration, interior lighting, internet and networking, garage doors, medical equipment, and a handful of outlets. It is the most efficient use of a single battery, and it stretches runtime because the largest loads in the house are excluded by design.
Whole-home backup keeps every circuit energized, including air conditioning, electric ranges, pool equipment, and EV charging. It usually requires two or more batteries and careful attention to inrush current from motor loads. Daily life continues without anyone in the house noticing the outage, which for many owners is the entire point.
Runtime is straightforward arithmetic: usable capacity divided by the load you keep on, extended each day the sun recharges the battery. A single Tesla Powerwall with roughly 13.5 kWh of usable capacity carries an essential-loads panel through a long evening and night, then recharges from the array the next morning. That solar recharge cycle is why a battery paired with panels outperforms a battery alone during multi-day events.
Undersizing produces a battery that empties before the peak window closes. Oversizing produces capacity that never cycles and never earns. We size from data rather than intuition.
Most Southern California homes we design land between one and three Powerwalls. Commercial and non-profit sites, where demand charges and resiliency requirements dominate, are modeled differently and can scale into Tesla Megapack territory. Our commercial team handles that class of project.
We standardize on equipment we can service ten years from now. Tesla Powerwall remains the workhorse of our residential storage practice because it is AC-coupled, which lets it pair with nearly any existing solar system, and because generation, storage, vehicle charging, and monitoring live inside one application rather than three. Chemistry matters as much as brand: lithium iron phosphate cells tolerate heat better and cycle more times than older chemistries, which is the relevant question in an inland garage in August.
Where a project calls for something other than Tesla, we specify it. We are not a single-product installer, and the right battery is the one that fits the electrical service, the backup scope, and the owner's monitoring preferences. See our Tesla energy page for the full Powerwall and Solar Roof ecosystem.
Battery storage qualifies for the 30 percent federal Investment Tax Credit, including when the battery is added to a solar array installed years earlier. California's Self-Generation Incentive Program has historically offered additional rebates, with the largest allocations reserved for medically vulnerable households and properties in high fire-threat districts. Program funding moves, so we confirm current availability during design rather than quoting a number that may have expired.
Payback depends on your rate plan, how much of your consumption falls in the peak window, and how often the grid fails where you live. Owners on high peak rates with substantial evening load see the fastest return. Owners in outage-prone canyon and foothill communities often weigh resiliency alongside the arithmetic, and price a spoiled refrigerator, a lost work day, or a night without air conditioning into the decision. For a fuller treatment of the financial side, read our guide to financial considerations for homeowners.
Battery location matters more than most proposals admit. A battery mounted on a west-facing exterior wall in the Inland Empire runs hotter, throttles more often, and ages faster than the same unit in a shaded garage. We choose placement for temperature stability and service access, not for the shortest conduit run.
A battery is only as good as its dispatch strategy. Time-based control shifts discharge into the peak window to maximize savings. Backup reserve holds a floor of capacity for outages, which matters most during red flag conditions and planned public safety power shutoffs. Storm watch functions pre-charge the battery ahead of forecast events. Those settings should be revisited whenever your rate plan or household load changes, and we do that with owners rather than leaving them to a support forum.
Our service relationship continues past commissioning: performance monitoring, alert notifications, inverter service, warranty administration, and annual reviews.
